The Sustainable Biomass Program (SBP) is a certification system designed for woody biomass, mostly in the form of wood pellets and woodchips, used in industrial, large-scale energy production. SBP’s purpose is to facilitate the economically, environmentally and socially responsible use of biomass enabling climate goals to be met.
The certification system provides assurance that woody biomass is sourced from legal and sustainable sources allowing companies in the biomass sector to demonstrate compliance with regulatory requirements. Wherever possible, use is made of the FSC and PEFC standards and processes already applied to other forest product streams.
SBP recognises the value and benefit of good governance, with multi-stakeholder governance arrangements that bring together stakeholder groups representing civil society interests, biomass producer interests and those of biomass end-users.
NEPCon, a non-profit organisation working to support better land management and business practices that benefit people, nature and the climate in 100+ countries around the world, is accredited by SBP to certify biomass producers like SBIOCI.
SBIOCI is SBP-certified and our biomass comes with an SBP claim and is accompanied by verified energy data, allowing carbon emissions calculations to be made.
